Quick Take: The Burning Plain
The Burning Plain
A mostly interesting, though ultimately unremarkable character study. Highlights include a delicate directorial debut by Guillermo Arriaga and sensitive performances throughout. Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger are impressive, while a bone-chilling Jennifer Lawrence earns top marks. A plot synopsis would read soap-operatic, but a deconstructed, then reconstructed timeline builds intrigue. Despite a few moments of inspiration, the film just scratches the surface. Characters earn little investment. The narrative lacks gravity. Dialogue is mundane. Forced motifs abound. There are some gentle surprises, though most revelations unveil amid high-beam-like foresight. One lesson learned, or, perhaps, an alternate title: “Think Before You F*ck.” C
