- Scores are tabulated from awards and distinctions bestowed by Oscar "precursors," or guilds, critic groups, and other organizations that annually honor achievements in filmmaking.
- With a few exceptions, only awards that specifically recognize achievements in the exact categories being tracked are included in the Tracker. For example, awards for best "newcomer" are NOT included. Broader distinctions, however, such as best "screenplay" over separate "original" and "adapted" categories, ARE included.
The Scoring System
- WINS, indicated by a BLUE ribbon, are worth 2 POINTS.
- NOMINATIONS (NOMS), indicated by a RED ribbon, are worth 1 POINT.
![]() | Blue Ribbon | WIN | +2 POINTS |
![]() | Red Ribbon | NOM | +1 POINT |
- BRONZE ribbons indicate a general acknowledgment, such as placement on a "Top 10" list. Each is the equivalent of a nomination and also worth 1 POINT.
![]() | Bronze Ribbon | +1 POINT |
- RUNNER-UPS, indicated by a SILVER ribbon, are worth 1.5 POINTS.
- A "RUNNER-UP" is specifically a single 2nd place distinction, either announced as a "runner-up" or otherwise inferred. If more than one runner-up is regularly declared, each is treated and recorded as a nomination instead. More than one runner-up may be recorded only in the event of a tie for 2nd place as declared or otherwise inferred.
![]() | Silver Ribbon | RUNNER-UP | +1.5 POINTS |
- Certain awards are worth EXTRA POINTS (50% more). These awards are generally accepted as higher distinctions or are more predictive of Oscar success. They are indicated by the color GOLD, either as a gold colored ribbon or a gold outline around a ribbon.
![]() | Gold Ribbon | WIN | +3 POINTS |
![]() | Silver Ribbon (Gold Outline) | RUNNER-UP | +2 POINTS |
![]() | Red Ribbon (Gold Outline) | NOM | +1.5 POINTS |
- Other awards are worth FEWER POINTS (50% less). These awards are in some way exclusive in their recognitions. For example, they may recognize only independent films, or films associated with a specific advocacy or minority group. Should a "runner-up" be declared by one of these groups, it is treated as a nomination instead. These awards are indicated by different colored ribbons:
![]() | White Ribbon | WIN | +1 POINT |
![]() | Purple Ribbon | NOM | +0.5 POINTS |
- Ribbons with tags provide additional information about the given award. Tags may appear on any colored ribbon and do not by themselves affect the value of the given award.
![]() | DR | Recognized for achievement in a DRAMA. |
![]() | C/M | Recognized for achievement in a COMEDY/MUSICAL. |
![]() | IND | Recognized for achievement in an INDEPENDENT film. |
